Studio Gamma: MacArthur Square Housing Project

Home

Axometric Drawing

This is a housing project located in MacArthur Square, near Carlton. Comparing to the other studios, this studio is the most intense in terms of workload and requirements. The project asks us to design minimun of 6 dwellings that accomendates at least 16 people. There's also the requirement of 3 different apartment type. Then, there are also the requirements of at least 30% open green space, 3 levels, outdoor balconies, cross ventilation, communal laundry, bike storage, rainwater storage and solar panels, which I found very overwhelming.

Reflection

All the project requirements made this project very stressful, as i still had to come up with an concept that make the project unique. So my approach was to design something that achieve all the requirements first, then think of a concept that suit my design, which surprising work because I positioned all my communal facility in the center and the tutor liked it. Therefore, I just kept going, further reinforcing on the concept of shared communal space, adding orangery, cafes, playground space and etc. I think the workload of this studio was intense and the tutor was also very strict but it made it the most rewarding studio in the end and I learnt a lot about designing apartment units.
