The challenges of this project is to design a quiet public space in a park with a lot of noise from the trains and roads nearby. In addition, as it was quite shaded by the viaducts, there is a limited access to natural light. Lastly, the site is important to both aboriginal heritage and melbourne’s history as it was the area where the enterprize ship landed. Therefore, there is a need to acknowledge that history within the design.
My Approach: As it was a large scale project with many considerations, I didn’t want to head straight into 3D remodeling and digital drawings. From previous experience, it takes a lot more time to make changes on 3D software, whereas in pen and paper, it is much faster and I could get feedback quickly during class. Therefore, I try to spend more time in the initial design phrase with pen and paper before moving into 3D modeling.
Design Concept: My entire design is about the atrium space, it acts as a gathering space, a space that allows natural light, a green space for visitors to take a break and a space that nest the historical artefacts. The circulation and programs also spreads out from that central atrium.

This was a fun project because I approched it differently. Instead of 3D modeling first, drawings later, I went from drawing first, modeling later. Not only that, I started with section instead of plan. Therefore, it allowed me to think about shading and natural light in a different way.
