This is the first design project that I have ever done asides from designing a bench in Year 10 design class so I had no idea how to approach the project. The brief asked us to design something around MSD that "allow young adults moments of social gathering (both intimate and socially distant), moments of play, and moments of individual respite and escape.". I understood every word in the brief and I had a lot of ideas. However, I didn't go for any crazy ideas such as a skatepark or a underground study room because I don't draw well and I wanted to do something sample.

All i did was just cut up some paper and made it curvy so it could be some sitting spaces. I thought as long as I summit everything required, this should be fine and I would get a pass. What I didn't realise was that I had to pin up my drawings and give a 5 minutes presentation about the project. The tutor asked me why I used the curvy things, why did I pick that location and etc. I did not prepare for that and I pretty much just stood there for 5 minutes. Luckily, I passed the assignment and it's from that point, I know that I really had to work on presenting and making things up during presentation so I don't just freeze when the tutor ask me questions
This is a project all about passive design and designing sustainable buildings. The brief was to design a study space in south lawn and incorprates elements of passive design such as shading, ventilation, natural sunlight and etc. I quite enjoyed this subject, it is more straight forward and less conceptual. I didn't have to present and that was a lot of information about it online.
The plan drawing was communicating how the design invites northern sun and cross ventilation as well as outdoor plants. Whereas the section communicates the ground structure, floor layers and shading.

Section Drawing
It was honestly a struggle in my first year, the grades wasn't good and it took me a long time to learn how to study design as it was very different from studying chemistry, maths or business. One of the biggest lesson that I have learnt in this year was that I just had to make a start on the drawings instead spending so much time on the concept. It doesn't really matter if the drawing looks bad initially, as long as you have something, you can always improve upon it. Time management is also important, asides from the studios, there's also 3 other subjects there's a need to plan things ahead and have a clear schedule.
